What could I do in my Gap Year?
Travel: discover new places, experience new cultures and meet new people. You can do this independently or join an organisiation that supports students to find gap year opportunities.
Combine travel with voluntary work: work in animal sanctuaries, conservation or in teaching.
Work abroad: in hospitality, as an au pair or holiday resorts.
Volunteer in the UK
To work with an organisation linked to your chosen degree course - for example, A Year In Industry will help students to find STEM placements before they start their degree.
Strenghten your university application by taking new subjects or resitting exams
Gaining relevant work experience to strenghten a university application: this is especially useful for health and social care applications.
Earn money before going to university
Take a bit of extra time to decide what you really want to do, possibly combining it with learning new skills, working or developing hobbies and interests.

Defer your place at university: apply in Year 13 along with everyone else in the Sixth Form, but you indicate on your UCAS form that you intend to start the year after.
Apply the year after you have left school: please be aware that school will still need to write a reference for you. The onus will be on you to organise your application and check with school that they are willing to process it.
Apply for university in the usual way, but contact the university later once they have offered you a place to see if you can change your start date until the following September.
